Nearly 21,000 Hectares of Iranian Forests, Rangelands Burn Down Every Year

Iranwire – Approximately 228,000 hectares of forests and rangelands have burned down in Iran between 2011 and 2021, an average of almost 21,000 hectares every year, according to Iran Open Data.

Analysis of official data shows that fires destroyed a total of 103,000 hectares of forests and 125,000 hectares of rangelands during these 11 years, the collaborative initiative said in a recent article.

The most destructive fires occurred in 2020, when about 3,700 wildfires destroyed nearly 48,000 hectares.

In 2021, the level of destruction of forests was particularly severe in the Zagros mountain range.
