Iranwire – The police chief of the northern Iranian city of Bandar Anzali has been arrested over the killing of a man, Mehran Samak, who celebrated the country’s World Cup defeat to the United States last week.
Majid Ahmadi, the lawyer of Samak’s parents, announced on December 6 that the police officer was transferred to Rasht Central Prison following the issuance of a “temporary detention order”.
The official is accused of “not observing the law on the use of weapons which led to the intentional murder” of the 27-year-old Samak, according to the lawyer.
In the evening of November 29, Samak was killed in Cheragh-Bargh neighborhood of Bandar Anzali during public celebrations by anti-government protesters following the match in which the United States beat Iran 1-0 to advance to the knockout stages of the competition.
Samak was shot in the head by security forces inside his car after honking the horn and cheering following the elimination of the Iranian national team from the World Cup in Qatar.
According to state media, police initially denied the man was killed by the authorities and announced the arrests of several suspects in connection with his death.
