The IRGC’s public relation department on November 23 blamed Israel for the killing of the officer, identified as Davoud Jafari.

Jafari, a military adviser in Syria and a member of the IRGC’s aerospace arm, was killed in the blast caused by a makeshift roadside bomb near Damascus two days earlier, the semiofficial Tasnim news agency cited IRGC as saying.

Iran, a main supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the country’s decadelong civil war, has sent thousands of Iran-backed fighters from around the region to fight alongside his forces.

Dozens of Iranian forces have been killed in the conflict, though Tehran has long said it has only a military advisory role in Syria.

At least 20 high ranked IRGC members have been killed since the war began in 2011. The IRGC announced in March the death of two high-ranking officers killed in an Israeli attack in Syria.
