Iranwire – Even as the two-week silence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the face of Iran’s ongoing protests, has caused widespread speculation, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah has come out in support of the Islamic Republic.
Referring to the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, after being arrested by the morality police, Hassan Nasrollah said in this speech: “The death of an Iranian lady in a situation whose dimensions are still unclear became controversial. The West began to get involved, while more than 50 people were killed elsewhere.”
Nasrollah added: “Iran is too strong to be shaken by the recent events.”
He went on to criticize reports on the recent protests and added: “Dozens, if not hundreds, of television and cyber accounts started to provoke the people of Iran, because Iran, which is the heart of the resistance axis [against the West] is the main target.”
Hassan Nasrollah is close with the leadership of the Islamic Republic and has supported the regime. Previous reports have disclosed that Iran had donated free fuel to Lebanon.
On September 11, in a joint press conference with Mojtaba Amani, the Iranian ambassador in Beirut, Walid Fayyaz, the Minister of Energy and Water of Lebanon, said that receiving free fuel from Iran was initiated by Hassan Nasrollah.
But other officials have supported the Iranian people’s nationwide protests. Hossein Nouri Hamdani and Asadollah Bayat Zanjani, two religious leaders in Qom, asked the government in separate statements to “listen to the people’s demands and to solve their problems.”
A group of seminary students and lecturers in Qom, Mashhad, and Tehran had also said in a recent statementthat “Khamenei must be brought down from leadership.”
