Canada Warns Citizens Against Travel to Iran

Iranwire – The Canadian government advised its citizens on June 9 to refrain from traveling to Iran due to the security situation, the threat of terrorist actions in certain areas and the danger of arbitrary detention.

The warning was posted on a government website after Canada informed Iran of a decision by the province of Ontario’s Supreme Court calling the January 2020 downing of Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 a “deliberate” and “terrorist” act. The passenger flight was downed by two Iranian missiles fired by the Revolutionary Guards, killing all 176 people aboard, most of them Iranians or Iranian-Canadian dual citizens.

Relations between Iran and Canada deteriorated after the incident and the families of the victims of the flight have repeatedly demanded that the Canadian authorities take more action against Iran’s government over the matter.

Last month, for instance, the Canadian national football team announced that it would withdraw from a June friendly match against Iran’s national team.

The travel advice also follows a souring of negotiations between Iran and the international community on its nuclear program.
