Ex-Fiancee Arrested For The Murder Of Iran Activist

Radiofarda – A prosecutor in Fardis, near Tehran says that a dissident who disappeared two weeks ago was killed by her former fiancée.

Hassan Jahanshahlu told Mizan news website that her body was discovered in a garden belonging to the sister of the suspected murderer and he has confessed to the crime.

Earlier, a burnt body was discovered and the family had identified it as the 33-year old victim, Maryam Faraji, but now the prosecutor says she was actually buried by the suspect.

Faraji who was an activist and dissident had been arrested during widespread protests at the beginning of this year, convicted to a three-year jail term and was free on bail when she disappeared.

This led to suspicions that she might have been abducted by security forces, but her lawyer, Mohamad Aghasi in his tweets had said last week he did not think security organs were involved.

Mr. Aghasi now says that the victim’s car was found in a property belonging to the suspect’s sister and after being arrested he confessed to killing her and burying the body in the same location.

According to the lawyer, the victim and the suspected killer had ended their engagement a while ago and the main motive for the murder is not clear.

The prosecutor’s office in Fardis has not revealed if the family of the suspect were somehow involved in the murder or if he buried the body without their knowledge.
