Photos show former Iranian VP Hamid Baghaei emaciated from hunger strike

Al-Arabia – Iranian website Dolate Bahar published images of Former Iranian Vice President Hamid Baghaei looking extremely emaciated as reports suggest his health has deteriorated after going on indefinite hunger strike.

Baghaei, who is considered the closest confidant to former hardliner Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said he was sentenced to 63 years in prison after being convicted last December on corruption charges.

A website with close links to Ahmadinejad reported that Iranian security authorities “transferred Baghaei on Saturday night to Evin prison despite his continuing deteriorating health”.

The published photos of pictures of Baghaei have sparked wide reactions over social media after it was circulated by semi-official news agencies like the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA).

Ahmadinejad has blamed the current regime and the head of the judiciary, Sadeq Larijani, for any risk to his former aide and confidant who is officially serving 15 years in prison after his conviction on March 15 for embezzling money and administrative corruption cases.

“Many people did not believe the news of the hunger strike and they were lying to such news, but at least that picture indicates the truth of what he is being claimed,” wrote student activist Zia Nabawi, who spent several years in Karoon prison in Ahvaz, commenting on the photographs of Baghaei.

Baghaei was jailed on charges of corruption and theft of 3.5 million euros, in addition to $750,000 from the allocation of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards allegedly misdirected and paid in funds to gain influence in African countries.

Baghaei has vehemently denied the changes and called for the trial of the commander of the Quds Force Qasem Soleimani instead for the loss of these funds instead of being held accountable.
