U.S. Envoy Says Has ‘Irrefutable Evidence’ Iran Violating UN Restrictions

RFL/RE – U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley will present what she says is “irrefutable evidence” that Iran has violated its international obligations at a press conference on December 14, the U.S. mission at the UN said.

Haley will discuss what the mission called Iran’s “ongoing destabilizing activities in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world.”

The United States and Saudi Arabia have accused Iran of supplying weapons to Yemen’s Huthi rebels, who fired missiles at Saudi Arabia in July and November.

Haley has called on the UN Security Council to take a tougher stance toward what she contends are Iran’s illegal arms deals with allies in Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria.

“Ambassador Haley will offer irrefutable evidence that Iran has deliberately violated its international obligations and has tried and failed to cover up these violations,” the mission said.

Haley’s announcement comes amid reports that a UN investigation into whether Iran supplied the two missiles Yemeni rebels fired at Saudi Arabia this year reached no firm conclusions.

The Associated Press and Agence France-Press have reported that UN officials examined debris from the missiles and said it pointed to a “common origin,” but they could not conclude that they came from an Iranian supplier.

AP and AFP said they obtained copies of a confidential report on the investigation provided by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the UN Security Council.

AFP reported that a separate team of UN experts who inspected the missile fragments during a visit to Riyadh last month found a possible link to an Iranian manufacturer, the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group, which is on the UN sanctions blacklist.

The experts, who report to the UN’s sanctions committee, found a component marked by a logo similar to that of the Iranian manufacturer, which is a subsidiary of the Iranian Aerospace Industries Organization, AFP said.

In his report, Guterres was reported as saying that the second team of investigators had seen the logo, but that they were still analyzing the information and had come to no conclusion.

Guterres’ report also raises the possibility that Iran may be violating a provision of its 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers calling on it not to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, AP reported.

AP reported that while Guterres said in the report that Iran’s missile activities may run counter to a that non-binding provision of the deal, he said overall Iran has complied with the agreement, which curbs Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
