Iranian Weightlifter Rostami Sets New Record, Wins First Rio Gold For Iran

VOA – Iranian weightlifter Kianoush Rostami has set a new world record of 396 kilograms in his 85-kilogram weight class, securing a first medal and a first gold for Iran at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Rostami had set the previous record of 395 kilograms himself in May in Iran.

In Rio, China’s Tian Tao also lifted 395 kilograms and won silver. Gabriel Sincraian secured bronze for Romania.

Rostami kissed the platform, then sank to his knees and looked skyward as if in prayer after surpassing Tian into first place with the last lift of the competition.

Rostami later jumped onto the podium to receive his gold medal as a boisterous band of supporters, who had cheered him on all night, chanted and waved Iranian flags.

North Korea also secured its first gold medal at the games when female weightlifter Rim Jong Sim won in the 75-kilogram class.

Darya Naumava of Belarus earned the silver medal, and the bronze medal went to Lidia Valentin Perez of Spain.
