Political prisoner Barzan Mohammadi on Hunger strike in Ilam Prison

Iran-HRM – Barzan Mohammadi, a civil activist imprisoned in Marivan Prison, has been on a hunger strike since Monday, May 16.

Mr. Mohammadi was recently transferred from prison to quarantine for not attending religious services in prison. He is currently on strike to protest his transfer.

Barzan Mohammadi was arrested by security forces on June 7, 2021, and transferred to the Sarvabad IRGC Intelligence Detention Center in Iran’s Kurdestan province near the Iraq border.

A day after his detention, he was transferred to Marivan Prison.

The Marivan Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Roozbeh Behboodi eventually sentenced him to 22 months and 17 days in prison on charges of insulting the leadership and propaganda against the regime.

Barzan Mohammadi was arrested by security forces in Tehran during nationwide protests in August 2018 and was subsequently tried for his social media posts and online activities.

A Kurdish citizen from Sarvabad, in Iran’s Kurdistan province, Mohammadi was sentenced to six years in prison in a court session presided over by Judge Salavati on the charges of “gathering and colluding to undermine national security” and “propaganda against the state.” His appeal was heard in Branch 54 of the Court of Appeals of Tehran on February 23, 2019. The court ruled that Mohammadi’s sentence should be reduced to three years and six months in prison.

He was sent on leave from Evin Prison in June 2020. Finally, on July 5, 2020, he was informed of his early release via a telephone call from the Judgment Enforcement Unit of the Evin Court.
