Prisoners are dealt with as slaves in the Central Prison of Karaj

Iran-HRM – Prisoners are dealt with as slaves by the authorities of the Central Prison of Karaj, said a prisoner released from this prison. Food and other stuff are provided just enough to keep the prisoner alive.

The prisoner said:

Food is little and very low in quality. The bread is not edible, at all. The bread is a piece of dough that has not been cooked enough. The prison’s store sells items for double the real price and food stuff become more expensive by every passing day.

Those who have the money can shop from the store. Some prisoners help one another out of a humanitarian feeling. Some prisoners are so poor, they resort to crimes to obtain a little amount of food to remain alive.

On the other hand, there are various gangs who distribute narcotic drugs in prison. They usually have fights and several of them end up in the clinic.

The situation of medicines is worse than the food. The prison’s pharmacy does not provide even aspirins to the prisoners. But narcotic drugs are always available.

The prison’s warden and other officials know everything but do not do anything for such miserable conditions. They regard prisoners as slaves and if the prisoner is alive that is enough for them.

There have been several reports on unsanitary conditions and inadequate healthcare inside the Central Prison of Karaj.

Some 600 prisoners detained in a ward called “Souleh” in Karaj Central Prison are held under catastrophic conditions susceptible to infection with the coronavirus.

Souleh used to be the prison’s workshop which has now turned into the quarantine ward. The ward, 2500 sq. meters, holds new arrivals and inmates returning from furlough.

The water and sewage system in the ward is not sufficient for this number of people. The toilets are usually clogged and evacuated by pumps. The nasty odor of sewage has made the ward’s atmosphere intolerable.
