Iranwire – Despite a recent spike in tensions between the Islamic Republic and the United States, American officials say that technical talks regarding Iran’s nuclear programme remain ongoing, with Washington continuing to emphasise its commitment to a diplomatic resolution.
According to major U.S. media outlets, including CNN, Reuters, and ABC News, an unnamed American official revealed that the United States remains committed to finding a diplomatic path with the Islamic Republic and that technical discussions on nuclear issues have not been suspended. The official reiterated Washington’s core stance that the Islamic Republic “must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
These remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fresh round of retaliatory measures against the Islamic Republic over the past few days while making contradictory statements regarding the future of diplomacy.
On Wednesday, during a visit to Ankara, Trump declared that the previously signed memorandum of understanding intended to end hostilities was “over,” adding that he had no desire to continue engaging with Tehran.
However, just hours later, Trump shifted his tone, stating that American negotiators could continue the talks if they wished to do so, though he personally remained pessimistic about the prospects of the negotiations. The unnamed U.S. official emphasised that the current understanding between the two nations is strictly “performance-based.”
Washington views recent actions, such as failing to keep the Strait of Hormuz fully open and launching attacks on shipping vessels, as a “completely unacceptable” breach of commitments by the Islamic Republic. Furthermore, the official characterised the strikes on civilian commercial shipping as “acts of terrorism.”
