33-Year-Old Protester Charged with “Moharebeh” for Helping Injured

Iranwire – Mahboubeh Shabani, a 33-year-old resident of Mashhad, was arrested on the evening of February 2 by agents of the Mashhad Intelligence Department and is currently being held in the women’s ward of Vakilabad Prison.

Shabani, one of the individuals detained during the January protests in Mashhad, is now facing the charge of “Moharebeh” (enmity against God).

Human rights media outlets, citing informed sources, reported that during her arrest, the female protester was subjected to severe violence by five male agents and one female agent. Her personal motorcycle was also seized.

Reports confirm that the “Moharebeh” charge against Mahboubeh Shabani stems from her efforts in “providing aid to wounded protesters during the Mashhad protests on January 8 and 9.” She allegedly used her motorcycle to transport the injured to medical centers and hospitals.

The Judiciary of the Islamic Republic has cited these humanitarian actions as the basis for the charge of “Moharebeh,” a crime that, under Sharia-based laws, carries the death penalty.

Shabani’s legal situation has gone largely unnoticed due to intense pressure from security agencies and a lack of family support following the deaths of her parents. This isolation has sparked grave concern among human rights activists, who are warning of the potential for a death sentence or summary execution and are calling for an immediate end to the judicial pressure against her.

In recent days, the Islamic Republic has executed at least four protesters detained in connection with the January unrest: Ali Fahim, Amir-Hossein Hatami, Mohammad Amin Bigleri, and Shahin Vahed-Parast.

Additionally, on Thursday, March 19, three other detainees from the January 8 protests in the city of Qom, Mehdii Ghassemi, Saleh Mohammadi, and Saeed Davoudi, were executed.
