alarabiya – Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday denied that Tehran had attacked its neighbors, claiming that its strikes were exclusively aimed at US targets.
“We did not attack our friendly neighboring countries, but rather targeted American military bases, installations and facilities in the region,” he wrote in a post on X.
Pezeshkian defended the strikes, saying that Iranians would “stand and resist to the death to defend” their country.
“Iran’s defensive operations are directed exclusively against targets and facilities that are the origin and source of aggressive actions against the Iranian nation, and we consider them our legitimate targets,” he wrote.
Pezeshkian added that Iran has always been interested in the “maintenance and continuation of friendly relations with the governments of the region.”
“However, this does not diminish Iran’s inalienable right to defend itself against military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime.”
Pezeshkian’s posts were in contradiction with a video statement earlier the same day during which he apologized to neighboring countries for attacks launched on them by Iran and vowed that they would not be targeted unless attacks originated from them.
“I must apologize on my own behalf and on behalf of Iran to the neighboring countries that were attacked by Iran,” he said.
Since February 28, the US and Israel have launched strikes against targets in Iran.
Iran, in turn, has launched attacks on Israel and US bases in the region as well as indiscriminate attacks on neighboring countries that are neither involved in the war nor have given permission to warring parties to launch strikes from their territory.
