Iranwire – More than 800 filmmakers and cultural activists from across the world have spoken out, condemning what they called the Islamic Republic’s “organized crimes” against protesters.
The signatories of the statement emphasized that “these actions are a clear and systematic violation of fundamental human rights and constitute a definitive instance of crimes against humanity.”
Prominent names like Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, and Yorgos Lanthimos signed the statement, along with exiled Iranian artists Golshifteh Farahani, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, and Shirin Neshat.
In their statement, the artists warned that staying silent means being complicit in violence, saying no political power has the right to massacre its own people or silence the truth to preserve itself.
Since the evening of Thursday, January 8, thousands of protesters have been killed or injured as the Islamic Republic enforced an internet and communications blackout. After images and reports emerged showing the scale of the crackdown, figures across the world, from politicians to artists, condemned the regime’s actions. The Islamic Republic, however, continues to claim that civilians were killed by “armed terrorists.”
