18-Year-Old Killed During Protests Outside Tehran

Iranwire – An 18-year-old man was shot and killed by security forces during protests in a Tehran suburb last week

Erfan Faraji died on Wednesday during demonstrations in Rey, a source close to the family told IranWire. He had turned 18 just one week earlier.

Authorities delayed returning Faraji’s body to his family, the source said. He was buried on Saturday without public notification.

The source told IranWire that Faraji’s body was likely among those of protesters who were killed and transported by truck to Kahrizak.

His death comes as protests entered their third week across Iran, following a currency devaluation that began in late December.

Demonstrations have spread nationwide despite a sweeping internet blackout now in its fifth day.

Rights groups say security forces have killed hundreds of protesters since the demonstrations began, though confirming casualties has proven difficult amid widespread communications disruptions.

The government has not released official casualty figures.

Iran shut down internet access nationwide on Thursday as protests intensified.
