Iranwire – On Sunday, January 11, 2026, the UN’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission urged the Islamic Republic to immediately restore internet and mobile communications and to halt the violent crackdown on the nationwide January protests.
In its report, the fact-finding mission said – citing “credible information” – that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council had ordered security forces to carry out a “decisive” crackdown “without restraint” to put an end to the protests.
According to reports from media outlets and human rights groups, large numbers of protesters have been injured or killed during Iran’s 2025–26 nationwide demonstrations. IranWire has confirmed that security forces used live ammunition against protesters, with available information showing that violence escalated after the internet was cut on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
The UN fact-finding mission said the January 2026 crackdown follows a pattern already documented during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, marked by serious human rights violations, a systematic lack of accountability, and structural impunity for state officials involved.
According to the mission’s findings, protests spread to at least 64 cities across Iran. Before the internet shutdown on January 8, the mission reported more than 40 protesters killed – most of them men, including at least five children – in areas including Qom, Yasuj, Kermanshah, Ilam, and Lorestan.
The mission also said that hundreds of protesters, including 113 children, were arrested during the demonstrations. The report added – citing statements from Iran’s parliament – that some security personnel were also killed during the protests.
