Iranian Christian Convert Faces Deportation From Sweden

iranwire – An Iranian man who converted to Christianity is facing deportation from Sweden despite having lived in the country for nine years and being married to a woman with Swedish residency who is currently pregnant.

Omid Mohammadi, 36, from Kermanshah, received a deportation order from Sweden’s Migration Agency that would separate him from his wife just three months before the birth of their first child.

Mohammadi arrived in Sweden in November 2015 and holds a degree in information technology from Kermanshah Technical University.

He has lived in Timrå for nearly seven years and worked in elderly care for several years.

He married his wife four years ago. She obtained Swedish residency in 2018, before meeting him.

“I have always tried to be a useful member of Swedish society and, through work and service, to have a real share in this community,” Mohammadi told IranWire.

Mohammadi said he faces serious threats if returned to Iran because he is Kurdish and a Christian convert.

He said Iranian security forces summoned his father and brother on two occasions and threatened them.

According to Mohammadi, the agents demanded that his family pressure him to return to Iran and prohibited maintaining contact with him otherwise.

“I belonged to a religious minority in Iran and was Sunni. In January 2022, I converted to Christianity. Since then, threats and security pressure against my family have intensified,” Mohammadi said.

He attributed the pressure on his family to both his media activities and his religious conversion.

Mohammadi has made what he described as a “simple and humane” appeal to be allowed to remain in Sweden for the birth of his child and to continue living in the country where he has worked for years.

He has called on human rights organizations, refugee advocacy groups, and the public to monitor his case and help prevent his deportation and separation from his family.
