iranwire – The family of detained Iranian activist Sepideh Gholian has received no information about her condition or whereabouts since her arrest at a memorial ceremony for human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikurdi, her brother said.
Mehdi Gholian said in a social media post that more than a day after Friday’s memorial service, the family remains without any word from his sister.
Witnesses said she was beaten during her arrest for attending the ceremony, he added.
He said she has not contacted the family, and officials have provided no information about her location or condition.
The Mashhad prosecutor announced on Saturday that 39 people were arrested during the seventh-day memorial ceremony for Alikurdi, who was found dead in his office on December 5 under circumstances his friends have described as suspicious.
Those detained include Javad Alikurdi, the deceased lawyer’s brother; Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate; and activists Aliyeh Motallebzadeh, Sepideh Gholian, Hasti Amiri, and Pouran Nazemi.
Sepideh Gholian is a labor rights activist and former political prisoner who has been arrested multiple times for her advocacy work. She was previously imprisoned for supporting workers’ protests.
The arrests followed a violent crackdown on mourners at Alikurdi’s memorial service at the Ghadir Baba Ali mosque in Mashhad. Videos showed plainclothes security forces wielding batons and attacking attendees.
