Wife of Imprisoned Iranian Lawyer on Hunger Strike Briefly Detained

iranwire – Iranian security agents detained the wife of imprisoned lawyer Taher Naghavi for several hours on Monday after raiding the couple’s home without a warrant.

Ministry of Intelligence agents searched the home and confiscated a laptop, mobile phone, flash drives, hard drives, and other items before detaining Soheila Sedghiani.

She was released after three hours of interrogation.

Iranian authorities frequently detain or interrogate family members of political prisoners and activists as a form of pressure against dissidents.

A source close to the family said authorities provided no explanation for the raid or Sedghiani’s detention, according to the Democratic Society of Azerbaijan news site.

Naghavi, a political prisoner held at Evin Prison, has been on hunger strike since October 27 to protest being denied medical treatment. He has also been barred from family visits.

Naghavi suffers from fractures in six vertebrae and chronic pain, and has recently experienced complications from hemorrhoids, a bladder mass, and prostate inflammation.

Prison authorities have repeatedly denied requests for medical leave or conditional release despite his worsening condition.
