iranwire – Iranian authorities arrested eight people for operating a Telegram channel, charging them with forming a network “to disrupt national security and propaganda against the state.”
The detainees are core members of the “Shikar-e Mozdoor” (Mercenary Hunter) channel, Abbas Pouriani, the chief justice of Mazandaran province said. The channel has been blocked.
Arrests happened in Ramsar, Tonekabon, Chalus, Abbasabad and Nowshahr after nearly 10 months of surveillance, Pouriani said.
Cases were filed in Chalus Prosecutor’s Office before the detainees were transferred to prison.
Investigations continue to identify additional suspects, he said.
Authorities did not disclose the detainees’ identities or arrest dates.
Iran routinely arrests citizens for social media activity, charging them with national security offenses that carry lengthy prison sentences.
