iranwire – At least two women have been killed in separate domestic violence cases across Iran in recent days.
A man named Mohsen Haghighi shot and killed his 30-year-old wife, Khatereh Karpardaz, on Friday evening in an incident that also left another man dead. The suspect then committed suicide.
Local sources said police recovered a handgun from the home and impounded two vehicles belonging to the victims.
Tasnim news agency reported the second male victim, 45 years old, was also stabbed before being shot.
In a separate case, authorities in Salmas arrested a man accused of killing his wife with a knife over what police described as a “family dispute.”
The suspect fled after the killing in a village but was later arrested in a northwestern city, Etemad newspaper reported.
The report did not identify the victim or provide a specific date.
Iranian media also reported the trial of a man who killed his wife in Tehran in April 2024.
Forensic examiners determined the woman died by suffocation, contradicting her husband’s claim she fell from a stool while retrieving an object from a height.
The defendant, married nine months, said they argued over purchasing a “large mirrored shoe rack.”
He admitted in court to covering his wife’s mouth “so neighbors wouldn’t hear” during the argument, causing both to fall. The woman stopped breathing moments later.

A draft law to protect women from violence has been stalled for over a decade between Iran’s parliament, government and judiciary.
Under current law, perpetrators of domestic violence – typically fathers, brothers or husbands – often receive short sentences, especially when families decline to press charges, allowing offenders to return to society quickly.
