Iranwire – The mother of a man who died by self-immolation in southern Iran was admitted to intensive care on Monday, according to a human rights organization.
Mani Baledi suffered severe psychological shock after her son, Ahmad, set himself on fire. Her condition worsened rapidly after she learned of his death.
The family rushed her to the hospital for emergency treatment, according to the Karun Human Rights Organization.
Doctors have warned that Baledi’s physical and psychological condition is “very critical,” and she requires immediate medical and psychological support.
Ahmad Baldi, a young man from Ahvaz, set himself on fire earlier this month in the city’s Zeitoun neighborhood after municipal enforcement officers attempted to demolish his family’s food stall in Zeitoun Park.
He died nine days later at Taleghani Hospital in Ahvaz due to the severity of his burns.
His death has become a flashpoint in Khuzestan province, where rising poverty and unemployment have driven at least four people to self-immolation in recent months.
Within hours of Ahmad’s funeral, the mayor of Ahvaz resigned under pressure. Several municipal officials were arrested, and Iran’s president ordered an investigation into how a routine enforcement action turned fatal.
