Kurdish Man on 70th Day of Hunger Strike in Iranian Prison

iranwire – A Kurdish man has entered the 70th day of a hunger strike to protest coercive interrogation and pressure to issue forced confessions, a human rights organization reported.

Behzad Rasouli, 42, from Saqqez, was transferred to Khomeini Hospital due to significant weight loss and deteriorating health.

He has refused intravenous fluids and says he will continue his strike until granted temporary release. Rasouli began his hunger strike on September 8.

A source close to the family said Rasouli is protesting intense security pressure, including being denied visits with his son and prolonged judicial limbo, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

Rasouli’s son, Mehrsaman Rasouli, and his ex-wife, Mitra Taghipour, have been placed under travel bans by security agencies in Isfahan, preventing them from visiting.

Rasouli is being held in quarantine-like conditions, denied phone calls, and barred from outdoor time in the prison yard, according to Hengaw.

His detention was extended for 120 days on October 8, the 33rd day of his hunger strike.

Rasouli was arrested on July 26 in Isfahan while visiting his son.

He was held at a security agency in Isfahan for weeks without access to a lawyer or family contact before being transferred to Saqqez Prison.

Family members received no information about his whereabouts during that period.

Rights groups say forced confessions are commonly used in Iran’s judicial system, particularly in cases involving political activists, ethnic minorities, and dissidents.
