Lawyer Faces Charges for Representing Family of Protester Killed in 2022

iranwire – Iranian authorities have opened a case against a lawyer who represented the family of a man killed during the 2022 nationwide protests.

Babak Eslami Farsani announced on Saturday that he had been summoned to appear before Branch 2 of the Arak Prosecutor’s Office to defend himself.

He has been charged with “propaganda activities against the Islamic Republic,” HRANA human rights group said.

Eslami said the summons was issued in connection with his role as the legal representative for the family of Mehrshad Shahidi, who was killed during the protests in Arak.

Shahidi, a 19-year-old chef, was killed on October 26, 2022, during the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in central Arak.

He succumbed to fatal injuries caused by multiple blows to the head with batons by security forces.

The 2022 protests erupted across Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody after being detained for allegedly wearing her headscarf “improperly.”
