Iranwire – A Kurdish prisoner held in Iran for over two years is in critical condition after authorities denied him medical treatment following torture, a human rights group said on Monday.
Loqman Alizadeh, 36, has kidney and intestinal infections, heart problems, and a fractured shoulder while detained at Ghezelhesar Prison near Tehran.
Prison officials have refused to transfer him to outside medical facilities despite doctors’ recommendations, the Norway-based rights group said.
Alizadeh was arrested on September 4, 2023, in Bukan in Kurdistan Province and held in solitary confinement at an intelligence facility in Urmia, where he was tortured and coerced into confessing.
A source said Alizadeh developed intestinal and heart complications from physical torture during interrogation.
He underwent surgery at Evin Prison’s clinic but did not recover and needs additional treatment.
He recently collapsed and fractured his shoulder.
Prison and judicial authorities have shifted responsibility for his care, resulting in no treatment, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Alizadeh remains in pre-trial detention after 800 days, with no formal charges or evidence presented against him.
A family source said authorities threatened to withhold medical care unless he provides another forced confession.
