Rafsanjani’s Daughter Claims Former Iranian President Was Assassinated

Iranwire – The daughter of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has claimed that her father was assassinated, though she provided no evidence to support the allegation.

Faezeh Hashemi said that while some people attribute her father’s death to Israel or Russia, she believes it was “an internal job.”

“My father was an obstacle to certain factions and had to be removed,” she said in an interview. “My father stood with the people, and because he held a high position, they couldn’t imprison him – so they removed him.”

Members of Rafsanjani’s family have, on several occasions in recent years, raised questions about the “ambiguous circumstances” surrounding his death and suggested that he may have been killed.

Rafsanjani died in January 2017 from what was officially announced as cardiac arrest while swimming in a pool in northern Tehran.

Rafsanjani served as Iran’s president from 1989 to 1997 and was one of the founding figures of the Islamic Republic.

He played a key role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, supported Ali Khamenei’s rise to the position of Supreme Leader, and served as parliament speaker during the 1980s Iran-Iraq War.

In his later years, Rafsanjani increasingly clashed with hardliners and Supreme Leader Khamenei.

In 2013, Iran’s Guardian Council barred him from running for president.
