Iran Moves to Ban Streaming Platforms as Viewers Turn Away From State TV

Iranwire – Iran’s state broadcaster has asked the judiciary to ban all streaming series and video content that lack official approval until new regulations are finalized, the head of the organization said.

Peyman Jebeli, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), told the Fars news agency that the proposal would prohibit the release of content without prior licensing.

“We proposed to the judiciary that until the regulations on violations are finalized, releasing home entertainment [private platform] series before obtaining permits should not be allowed,” Jebeli said.

In recent years, Iranians have increasingly turned to private streaming platforms as the number of high-quality series produced outside state television has grown.

Fars cited depictions of alcohol consumption, smoking, and the lack of hijab in private streaming content as reasons for tighter control.

The agency also named several productions, accusing recent releases of promoting “violence and mixed-gender dancing.”

The culture minister confirmed that oversight of streaming content was fully transferred last year to SATRA, an entity operating under the state broadcaster.

Jebeli said the Culture Ministry has not yet fully implemented its regulatory framework, so the broadcaster continues to refer violations directly to the judiciary.

The judiciary’s formal involvement in streaming oversight places the sector increasingly under the control of security and government agencies.
