16 Prisoners Moved to Solitary Confinement for Execution in Iran

Iranwire – 16 prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement on Monday at Qezelhesar Prison in Karaj in preparation for execution, according to a human rights monitoring group.

The prisoners had been convicted of murder and drug-related offenses and are awaiting execution, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported.

The simultaneous transfer of the inmates has raised concerns about a surge in executions across Iranian prisons, the report added.

Separately, five other prisoners, including one woman, were executed on Monday at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan.

Two of those executed were identified as Zeinab Khodabandeh and Sobhan Safinejad.

According to the report, all five had been arrested on drug-related charges and sentenced to death by revolutionary courts.

Iran executed at least 187 prisoners in September, a 140 percent increase compared to the same month last year, marking the highest monthly total in two decades.

The executions included three political prisoners and two prisoners of conscience.

Amnesty International reported last week that Iran executed more than 1,000 people in the first nine months of 2025.
