Iran Upholds Death Sentence for Boxing Coach Despite Legal Flaws

Iranwire – Iran’s Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of a boxing coach despite numerous legal flaws in his case, his lawyer said.

Babak Paknia said the sentence against Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani was confirmed by Branch 9 of the Supreme Court.

“Regarding the flaws in the case and the interference of third parties in the judicial process, we have written to the head of the judiciary,” Paknia wrote on X. “I hope that before it is too late, special inspectors will address the matter.”

Vafaei Sani was arrested in Mashhad in March 2020. He is accused of participating in nationwide protests following petrol price increases in November 2019 and demonstrations over the Revolutionary Guard’s downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane.

The charges against him include “spreading corruption on Earth” through incitement and deliberate destruction of specific sites, including a government enforcement building, and communicating with the Mujahedin-e-Khalq opposition group.

Vafaei Sani has denied the charges.

Vafaei Sani is an experienced boxing athlete and coach. He began teaching boxing at age 21 and won championships at the provincial level in Khorasan Razavi Province.
