Kurdish Man on Hunger Strike After 69 Days Held Incommunicado in Iran

Iranwire – A Kurdish man held incommunicado for 69 days has lost 13 kilograms during a two-week hunger strike protesting his detention, a human rights organization said.

Behzad Rasouli, 42, was transferred to Saqqez Central Prison after security forces detained him on July 26 in Isfahan, where he was visiting his 8-year-old child, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

His family was denied information about his whereabouts for more than two months despite repeated visits to judicial and security offices in Isfahan.

Rasouli contacted relatives after his transfer to confirm his location and hunger strike.

He has been denied access to legal counsel and is held in the prison’s quarantine ward, a source told Hengaw. His health has deteriorated.

In October 2021, security forces detained Rasouli’s then-wife, Mitra Taghipour, and their 4-year-old son at the Mehran border crossing in Ilam Province while returning from Iraqi Kurdistan.

They were transferred to the IRGC Intelligence Organization in Isfahan for interrogation before being released.

Rasouli was previously a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan while living in Iraqi Kurdistan. He later left the party and returned to Saqqez.
