Iranwire – Iranian Intelligence Ministry agents arrested the president of the local bakers’ union and at least 10 other bakers following a citywide strike.
Yadollah Elmi, head of the Bakers’ Union in Saqqez, was detained on Wednesday along with other union members after they launched a work stoppage protesting government inaction on bread pricing, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
The bakers had repeatedly requested that local authorities raise bread prices to offset rising production costs, but officials took no action, prompting the strike.
The arrests happened shortly after the bakers began their citywide work stoppage on July 2.
No official statements have been released about the charges against the detained workers or their whereabouts.
Saqqez is located in Iran’s Kurdistan province, where authorities have frequently cracked down on labor organizers and activists.
