Iranian Political Prisoner Begins Hunger Strike

Iranwire – A political prisoner held in Tehran’s Evin Prison began a hunger strike on Saturday to protest new charges filed against her, a human rights group said.

Iranian Political Prisoner Begins Hunger Strike

Parivash Moslemi started the hunger strike after authorities opened a new case against her for “spreading lies” related to activities before her imprisonment.

A source close to Moslemi’s family said she had initially been promised conditional release but was then told of the new case.

“Ms. Moslemi was initially promised conditional release but was later informed of a new case filed against her. She began the hunger strike in protest against this abrupt change in legal proceedings and the authorities’ broken promise,” according to HRANA human rights website.

Moslemi has previously gone on hunger strike to protest the lack of medical care in prison. She faces multiple health problems.

A Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Moslemi to three years and eight months in prison in August 2024.

The sentence includes two years for “assembly and collusion,” one year for “insulting the supreme leader,” and eight months for “propaganda against the state.”

Moslemi was arrested on July 7, 2024, after reporting to the Evin prosecutor’s office and was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison.

She was previously arrested in April 2024 and released after three days.

In September 2023, around the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death, she was arrested and held for one month at Qarchak Prison before being released on bail.
