Iranwire – Kurdish political prisoner Varisheh Moradi is being denied necessary medical treatment in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison.
According to the Campaign to Defend Varisheh Moradi’s Freedom, she is suffering from cervical disc herniation, spinal canal stenosis, and numbness in her right hand.
The campaign reports that Moradi urgently needs to be transferred to an outside hospital, but prison authorities have refused to cooperate.
Her condition has deteriorated, with persistent pain and numbness in her right hand. A neurologist examined her two months ago and recommended surgery.
Despite recommendations from doctors and prison medical staff, authorities under pressure from security agencies have blocked her transfer to external medical facilities.
Moradi previously went on a 20-day hunger strike to protest death sentences, which led to digestive problems and further worsened her health.
Following public and international pressure, she was briefly transferred to an outside medical facility two months ago for examination. However, despite medical advice, her treatment has not continued.
A Revolutionary Court in Iran sentenced Moradi to death on charges of “armed rebellion.”
The court cited her alleged affiliation with the Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK) as grounds for the sentence.
Throughout the proceedings, Moradi’s legal team faced significant restrictions. Her lawyers were denied access to her case file during the final hearing on October 6 and in previous sessions. Moradi herself was not allowed to present a defense in court.
Her legal troubles began on August 1, 2023, when intelligence agents abducted her while she was traveling from Marivan to Sanandaj.
According to the Hengaw Human Rights Organization, Moradi endured severe torture at the Sanandaj Intelligence Department’s detention center, including an incident in which she reportedly vomited blood and lost consciousness.
After spending five months in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, controlled by the Ministry of Intelligence, she was transferred to the women’s ward in December 2023.
