Iranwire – Patients’ lives are at risk as Yazd University of Medical Sciences pursues legal action following repeated power outages that have damaged critical medical equipment across the province.
Deputy of Medical Affairs Ali Zare announced on Friday that daily power cuts have severely impacted sensitive medical devices and created life-threatening conditions for patients, particularly those in intensive care units.
On Thursday, the tomotherapy device at the Yazd Radiation Therapy Center failed due to power fluctuations.
Patient treatment has been suspended while the device undergoes repairs, which could take up to two weeks.
Previous outages have damaged CT scanners, ICU monitoring systems, and other essential equipment. One hospital mammography machine sustained damages amounting to 10 billion rials (approximately $180,000).
Zare noted that emergency generators cannot be used continuously.
The university has filed a formal complaint with prosecutors, holding the electricity distribution company responsible for any potential incidents.
Medical staff and patients have voiced frustration over the ongoing issues. Similar problems have also been reported at physicians’ offices and the Yazd Diabetes Center.
