Iranwire – The Islamic Republic’s Judiciary Chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, has admitted that children were among nearly 90,000 people who faced judicial cases following the 2022 nationwide protests.
Speaking on Tuesday at a meeting with Education Ministry officials, Ejei confirmed that students and schoolchildren were among those detained.
He said issuing convictions for all detainees would have allowed “enemies to exploit” the situation.
Ejei said religious seminary members, Basij forces, academics, and teachers were sent to detention centers to provide “guidance” to the detainees.
Many subsequently received pardons or had their cases dismissed, he claimed.
Human rights organizations have documented the arrests of teenagers in schools, judicial proceedings against students, and expulsions of protesting university students during the crackdown.
Ejei said those who “committed crimes and took organized actions” did not receive pardons.
The 2022 protests erupted across Iran in response to the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman, for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code.
