Iranwire – An Afghan citizen detained in Ghezelhesar prison has died following a hunger strike to protest his treatment by prison officials.
Nabi Bayati began refusing food and water after being transferred to Ward 1, one of the most crowded and high-security sections of the facility.
He cited discriminatory and degrading treatment by authorities as the motivation for his protest.
Prison sources reported that Bayati and three other inmates were initially placed in solitary confinement after being accused of involvement in a physical altercation.
The group was subsequently transferred to a high-security section under orders from Esmail Farajnezhad, the deputy prison warden, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Despite notifying officials of his hunger strike, Bayati’s deteriorating condition was reportedly ignored by prison authorities.
Sources said that instead of providing care, officials intensified punitive measures by relocating him to a hallway in Ward 9, a transit area where he was denied access to basic necessities.
The hunger strike lasted four days, during which Bayati reportedly received no medical attention.
