Saudi defense minister in Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials

alarabiya – Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman arrived in Tehran on Thursday for talks with senior Iranian officials, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported.

Prince Khalid, accompanied by a high-level delegation, is scheduled to meet with Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, as well as other “senior political and security officials,” according to IRNA.

The discussions will focus on “developing defense relations and regional cooperation to strengthen peace and stability in the region, as well as combating terrorism,” the agency said.

Saudi state news agency SPA said Prince Khalid would hold “several meetings to discuss ties and issues of mutual interest.”

In March 2023, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced that they had reached an agreement, brokered by China, to reestablish diplomatic relations after seven years of no formal ties. The Kingdom had severed ties with Iran in 2016 following attacks by pro-regime protesters on its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad.

In November, Fayyad al-Ruwaili, chief of staff of the Saudi armed forces, met with Bagheri in Tehran. The pair discussed the “development of defense diplomacy and the expansion of bilateral cooperation,” IRNA said at the time.
