Iranwire – Zanjan mayor Mansour Soltani has confirmed that a municipal worker died after setting himself on fire.
Speaking to Iranian media on Tuesday, Soltani stated that the incident occurred on Monday.
Security camera footage shows the worker carrying petrol, apparently with the intent of self-immolation, which officials attribute to his mental condition.
According to the mayor, a nearby heater ignited the fire. Despite intervention efforts, the worker succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.
When asked whether interactions with management contributed to the incident, Soltani responded, “We do not confirm such claims and insist that all aspects be carefully investigated.”
Reports of worker suicides have risen in Iran over the past year amid growing poverty and inflation.
In Ilam province, three suicide deaths were recorded within a single week last year.
Two of the deceased were contractors at Chavar Petrochemical Company, while the third was the spouse of a dismissed worker.
