The court convicted Hasanzadeh of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” for encouraging local strikes to commemorate the second anniversary of the protest movement.

Judge Mehdi Fakhri of Bukan Criminal Court’s Branch 101 issued the sentence last fall, reportedly denying Hasanzadeh the right to present a defense.

His son, Mohammad Hasanzadeh, was killed on November 16, 2022, during protests in Bukan when security forces stabbed and shot him as he attempted to help a girl being detained by authorities.

Security forces have repeatedly targeted the father since his son’s death.

In July 2024, they arrested both him and his daughter, Solmaz, during a raid on their home on what would have been Mohammad’s birthday.

They were previously detained together in September 2023.

Authorities continue to pursue an additional case against Ahmad Hasanzadeh, the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reports.
