Hunger-Striking Reza Khandan Moved to Quarantine in Evin

Iranwire – Reza Khandan, husband of prominent lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, has been transferred from Ward 8 to the quarantine section of Evin Prison while on a hunger strike, according to statements from his wife.

Reza Khandan, husband of prominent lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, has been transferred from Ward 8 to the quarantine section of Evin Prison while on a hunger strike, according to statements from his wife

Sotoudeh announced on Saturday that her husband’s transfer came after a series of concerning incidents involving their family.

“Only the Islamic Republic is capable of beating teenagers for defending their rights, then arresting them, sending the elderly mother of a prisoner to the brink of death, and finally cutting off a prisoner’s phone access and moving them to quarantine,” she said.

The statement refers to a violent confrontation involving their son, Nima Khandan, who was beaten by prison guards in the prison’s visiting hall on January 30.

Nima was briefly detained and later released.

Former political prisoner Farhad Meysami reported that Khandan began his hunger strike to protest the pressure on his family and the assault on his son.

Prison authorities have also blocked Khandan’s phone card, cutting off his communication with the outside world.

“The lack of information about his condition, especially given his hunger strike, is truly concerning,” Meysami warned.

Khandan was arrested at his Tehran home in December, in connection with a case that was already closed. He has remained in custody since then.
