Iranwire – Iranian state television reported that the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Damascus was stormed on Sunday following the rebel capture of the city and the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
State media said that the attack was carried out by an armed group distinct from the rebel forces currently controlling Syria.
“It is said that the Iranian embassy was stormed alongside nearby stores by an armed group different from the group now controlling Syria,” Iranian state TV reported.
Broadcast footage revealed extensive damage inside the embassy, including broken windows, destroyed furniture, and documents scattered across the premises.
No immediate information was provided regarding casualties or the presence of diplomatic personnel during the incident.
The storming of the embassy follows a rapid rebel offensive that resulted in the capture of Damascus and other key Syrian cities within 11 days.
Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow and was granted asylum on “humanitarian grounds” after rebels took control of the Syrian capital in a lightning offensive.
Russian state media reported that Assad and his family arrived in the capital on Sunday night after his palace was looted and thousands of prisoners were freed, marking a swift end to his family’s decades-long rule.
Meanwhile, Israel seized territory along the border and bombed military targets amid growing concerns over the rising power of Islamist rebels now controlling large parts of Syria.
