Iranwire – An 11-year-old girl placed in foster care has died following what authorities describe as severe physical abuse by her foster parents in northeastern Iran.
Mahsa Golestani was just six months into a trial placement period with her foster family when she suffered fatal injuries, according to Shargh newspaper.
Her brother was also placed with the same family during this period.
The Kashmar public prosecutor has confirmed the arrests of both foster parents in connection with the death.
Preliminary investigations suggest the cause of death was due to severe beatings and neglect of basic care, although official forensic results are still pending.
The case has sparked scrutiny of Iran’s foster care system.
The National Welfare Organization defended its vetting process, saying the foster parents had completed all required steps, including psychological and medical evaluations.
However, the organization acknowledged the need to review its oversight procedures and promised accountability if negligence “is discovered.”
A provincial welfare employee revealed that both Mahsa and her brother endured repeated physical abuse during their brief time with the foster family.
