Iranwire – A 17-year-old victim of child marriage attempted self-immolation in Iran’s southeastern city of Iranshahr on Tuesday, local media reported.
The teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after setting herself on fire.
Local sources reported that the young girl had been forced into marriage with a young man a year ago, despite her objections.
The formal wedding ceremony reportedly took place just two weeks before the incident, following intense pressure from her parents.
“This girl had previously warned her family that she would set herself on fire if they forced her to marry,” a source told Haalvsh news website.
According to the latest report from the Iranian Statistics Center, more than 20,000 marriages involving girls under 15 years of age were recorded in just nine months of 2022.
