Eight Political Prisoners in Iran Face Risk of Execution

Iranwire – Eight prisoners in central Ahvaz, Shiban, and Sepidar prisons in Iran are facing imminent execution on political charges.

Eight prisoners in central Ahvaz, Shiban, and Sepidar prisons in Iran are facing imminent execution on political charges

Among them is Abbas Daris, an Iranian man on death row over his participation in the 2019 protests in the country.

In November 2019, more than 100 Iranian cities and towns were hit by protests after the government decided to raise fuel prices, with many demonstrators chanting against the Islamic Republic.

Abbas Daris and his brother, Moshen, were arrested in the south-western city of Mahshahr on charges of “waging war against God, inciting disorder and participating in the murder of Reza Sayadi,” a member of the special police forces known as NOPO.

The Mahshahr Revolutionary Court sentenced Daris to death. His lawyer, Fereshteh Tabanian, said that the Supreme Court upheld the sentence without giving any regard to objections she had filed in the case.

Another prisoner, Mujahid Korkur, was arrested during the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests. Korkur’s arrest was reported in mid-December of 2022. He was handed capital punishment in 2023 for allegedly killing several people during protests in the western city of Izeh.

Korkur’s alleged victims in Izeh on November 16 include Kian Pirfalak, a nine-year-old boy who was shot by the security forces in his parent’s car.

After partially recovering from injuries sustained during the shooting incident, Kian’s father, Meysem Pirfalak, released a video in which he refuted Korkur’s involvement in the death of his son.

“My wife and I witnessed firsthand the security forces… firing at our car, injuring me and killing my son,” he said.

Additionally, Ali Majdam, Moein Khanfari, Salem Mousavi, Mohammad Reza Majdam, Adnan Mousavi, and Habib Daris are also at risk of being executed.

These individuals were arrested on various charges and were sentenced to death following months of torture at IRGC intelligence detention centers.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic’s authorities executed 22 prisoners in the Ghezelhesar Prison near Tehran on Wednesday.

The prisoners had been previously sentenced to death for various non-political crimes, including murder, drug-related offenses, and rape.

Seven prisoners were convicted of drug-related offenses, four were convicted of murder, three Afghan nationals were convicted of rape, and seven Sunni prisoners and one additional prisoner had unspecified charges.

According to a report by Amnesty International, Iran has reached its highest level of death sentence executions in the last eight years, with the Islamic Republic’s judiciary executing 853 people in 2023 alone.
