Iranwire – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned “Iran’s axis of evil” against attacking Israel as fears of regional war intensify.
“We will respond and exact a heavy price for any act of aggression against us, from any front,” he said.
His comments come as Israel braces for potential attacks by Iran and Hezbollah in the coming days amid assessments that assaults could come from several fronts.
The United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken also warned on Monday that Iran and Hezbollah may attack Israel within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Blinken told his G7 counterpart that the US hopes to halt the escalation by persuading Iran and Hezbollah to limit their attacks and restrain any Israeli response.
He asked other foreign ministers to join that push by applying diplomatic pressure on the trio.
The unconfirmed report from US publication Axios was released on Monday, as fears of a regional war in the Middle East grew.
Iran and Hezbollah have pledged to retaliate for the killing of the top leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah last week.
The G7, which also includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, issued a statement on Monday expressing “deep concern over the heightened level of tension in the Middle East.” It called for restraint on all sides and insisted that “no country or nation stands to gain from a further escalation.”
Meanwhile, the Pentagon said on Friday it would deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the region.
In a call with his Israeli counterpart, the Pentagon said US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated the United States’ support for Israel’s security and “right to self-defense against threats from Iran, Lebanese Hezbollah, Houthis, and other Iranian-backed terrorist groups.”
