Iranwire Exclusive: Ex-Iranian Intel Official Says Haniyeh Room Bomb Blast ‘Impossible’

Iranwire – A former Iranian intelligence official has dismissed the theory of a bomb explosion at Ismail Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran, as reported by The New York Times and the Telegraph newspaper.

Speaking to IranWire, the former official described claims of a bomb explosion in Haniyeh's room as "illogical and impossible"

Speaking to IranWire, the former official described claims of a bomb explosion in Haniyeh’s room as “illogical and impossible.”

The New York Times reported last week that a bomb had been planted in the room where the head of Hamas’s political office stayed in Tehran about two months before his assassination.

This coincided with the death of Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage in May, and two months later, Haniyeh came to Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of newly-elected President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Following the New York Times report, the Telegraph on August 2 published that an official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed their belief that Mossad had hired agents from the “Ansar al-Mahdi Protection Unit.”

According to the Telegraph, the two agents who planted the bomb in Haniyeh’s room had left Iran.

The Ansar al-Mahdi Protection Unit, a subgroup of the IRGC, protects high-ranking officials and foreign guests.

The official who spoke to IranWire said, “When the leader of a friendly and brotherly country or organization comes to Iran, not only does the host’s security team search and clean the room he will stay in, but his own security team also thoroughly checks the residence using the latest technology.

“If there is any sign of suspicion, they are not allowed to stay there. Therefore, it is impossible for a bomb to be in a room for two months without being detected by the security teams,” he added.

The source, who remains in contact with Iran’s security organizations, added that evidence from the scene of Haniyeh’s assassination indicated the use of a projectile, with no signs of a bomb being used.

The IranWire also source claimed that the Ministry of Intelligence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a coordinated effort, leaked false information to foreign media reporters, think tanks, and even Western intelligence organizations to mislead them.

These actions are said to be directed by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Additionally, the IRGC Intelligence Organization uses close associates to mislead journalists and Western organizations, thereby concealing the Islamic Republic’s dangerous policies, according to the source.

The source emphasized that the priority of any government and intelligence organization should be to ensure people’s livelihoods to maintain national security.

However, according to the source, the Islamic Republic’s authorities are more focused on spreading propaganda and lies.

“Unfortunately, instead of working to reduce regional tensions and focusing on the well-being of the people, the regime’s leaders have become preoccupied with spreading lies and engaging in propaganda,” he said.

In recent days, media outlets close to the IRGC have denied reports of a bomb explosion.

Fars news agency, linked to the IRGC, rejected the New York Times report, asserting that Haniyeh’s death was due to a projectile.

They claimed that Western media published these reports to mitigate the consequences of Israel’s actions and absolve the “Zionist regime” of violating Iranian sovereignty.

Iranian officials have pointed towards Israel as being behind the attack, while the Benjamin Netanyahu government has so far refrained from commenting on it.
