Iranwire – An unidentified individual opened fire at the main entrance of Isfahan Central Prison on Thursday night, shooting at the premises from a vehicle before fleeing the scene, local media reported.
The police chief of Isfahan province said on Friday that the assailant used a Kalashnikov rifle during the attack. The attacker was killed after the police gave chase.
Officials said that a Peugeot vehicle, defying orders to stop from police patrol officers, entered the security zone of Dilijan city.
The driver then unleashed a hail of bullets on the pursuing police forces, evading capture at a checkpoint. The police fired back and stopped the vehicle.
“Despite being rushed to hospital and receiving immediate medical attention, the armed assailant succumbed to injuries,” a police source confirmed.
In the subsequent examination of the suspect’s car, authorities discovered a Kalashnikov weapon, a Winchester firearm, and 71 bullets.
As of now, the motive behind the shooting at Isfahan prison remains unknown.
