Iranwire – The Iranian authorities are accusing the lawyer representing the family of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old woman whose death in September 2022 while in police custody has led to nationwide unrest, of spreading “propaganda against the regime,” activists say.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network, a France-based group that monitors the human rights situation in western Iran’s Kurdish region, said that the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Tehran’s Evin prison summoned Saleh Nikbakht on March 11 and informed him of the charge against him.
Nikbakht was released on bail.
The human rights group quoted an informed source as saying that the charge, which carries a possible prison term of several years, stems from an “interview with a media outlet outside of Iran.”
Amini died on September 16, prompting more than five months of widespread protests demanding fundamental economic, social and political change. The unrest represents the biggest threat to the Islamic government since the 1979 revolution.
Amini was from the western Kurdish city of Saqqez. She was detained by Tehran’s morality police because she was allegedly wearing a hijab improperly. The authorities say the young woman died of natural causes, but eyewitnesses and her family say she was beaten by security forces.
