Iranwire – Iranian authorities have reportedly moved the family of a 16-year-old girl who fell into a coma in November after allegedly being beaten by security officers to a place under their supervision.
The Kurdpa news agency reported on January 17 that Hasti Hossein Panahi and her family were taken from their home in the village of Qoruchai to an “institutional home” in Sanandaj, in western Kurdistan province.
The report quoted a source as saying that the schoolgirl’s relatives “are not allowed to meet anyone.”
The teenager had been discharged from hospital as doctors lost hope that she would make a recovery.
On November 10, the school principal and security guards summoned Panahi and several other students and showed them videos of them participating in anti-government protests, Kurdpa reported.
The students were then taken to an “unknown location,” where they were beaten by security officers, before they were returned to the school in a state of shock, the news agency said.
Later in the day Panahi fell into a coma.
The Coordinating Council of Teachers Syndicates said that her medical file states her condition was caused by “a direct blow to the head,” Kurdpa reported.
Iran has been swept by unrest since the September death of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody for allegedly wearing a hijab improperly.
The protest movement – one of the deepest challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution – was met with a brutal crackdown by security forces in which more than 500 people were killed and over 18,000 were arrested, according to activists.
Around 20 people have been handed capital punishment in connection with the protests. Four young men have been executed so far.
Security forces have also launched raids on universities and schools across the country, violently arresting protesting students.
